Pinhole Glasses Good for Close Work and Far

July 3rd, 2009

Pinhole glasses are not made of glass but an opaque substance like metal or plastic. There are many little holes in the material that reduce the width of diverging rays. Because of this, the pinholes cause clearer vision in those who have myopia, farsightedness, diminished focus and astigmatism. The pupil may be wide open but only the central part is getting light. The visual improvement is greatly noticed.

A man named Scheiner first discovered this effect in 1573. Pinhole cameras operate the same way by increasing the depth of focus. An example of how the pinhole works is when someone will squint to see something clearer. By doing this, the upper and lower eyelids cut off rays that normally enter the pupil and the vision does improve a bit. By looking through the pinhole glasses, this cuts off rays from all sides. These glasses are worn very close to the eye, however in time, the brain ignores the material. While reading a book or paper, the little pinholes are more noticeable because of the short distance used. However, while watching TV or something farther away, only one pinhole would need to be used.

Some advantages of pinhole glasses include, being a simple solution to reading or close work. They provide improved vision at all distances, not just close or far. Pinholes could be used for a whole lifetime, unless they break. They are more inexpensive than prescription glasses. When pinholes get scratched, there is no effect on their performance. They also don’t need to be cleaned; fingerprints or marks do not affect the vision. These are for all ages, so even children can benefit by them. Cataract patients can see better through them. They can also prevent myopia. With so many people at computer screens, wearing pinholes can greatly reduce eye strain.
There are many advantages to pinholes, however, they cannot entirely eliminate the need for prescription glasses. It is so important to visit your eye doctor and know exactly what is best for you.

Pinhole Glasses Help Improve Vision

July 1st, 2009

Pinhole glasses may look like ordinary sunglasses until you take a closer look.  Instead of being outfitted with glass lenses, these special glasses feature an opague metal or plastic material which has been punched full of numerous small holes.  Pinhole glasses have been used by many individuals as a health device to improve their clarity of vision.

An individual usually winds up wearing prescription eyeglasses for vision improvement because the improper way that light bends as it enters their pupil causes myopeia (nearsighedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) or presbyopia (dimished focus of range caused by age). Looking through pinholes instead of regular lenses, however, reduces the width of light rays that actually enter the eye’s pupil.  Because the amount of light that improperly bends is greatly reduced and only the central part of a person’s pupil is receiving light, an improvement in clarity and sharpness of vision results.  This same principle has been used for decades by people in Alaska, who often wear eyeglasses with slits that successfully cut down the amount of glare from the abundant snow and ice in the environment.

There are a number of benefits to using pinhole glasses to improve your vision in preference to prescription lenses. Because these glasses can improve visual acuity at all distances, they can replace bifocals and trifocal eyeglasses for close-up reading as we age.  These special glasses never need changing like prescription glasses, are suitable for all ages and cannot be scratched like glass lenses. They provide a multi-purpose eyeglass which can be worn to improve vision when reading, watching TV or looking at things at a distance. They are excellent for reducing visual tiredness when doing computer work, can be used as sunglasses, can improve vision for anyone who has had eye surgery and is affected by glare, starbursts or halos appearing around lights and they have proven effective at helping people with cataracts see more clearly.

Are pinhole glasses a viable alternative to traditional eyeglasses?

June 30th, 2009

Pinhole (Stenopeic) glasses are a type of corrective eye wear that can improve the vision in persons who are farsighted, nearsighted, have astigmatism or who have decreased vision due to aging.  Traditionally, an eye doctor performs a manifest refraction to determine the prescription or power that is needed to properly correct the vision in each eye. If prescription glasses are needed frames and lenses can easily turn into a costly necessity, especially if bifocal lenses are required.

With pinhole glasses, there is no need for a prescription and the same pair can be used to correct both near and far vision. They are made with a series of 1mm dots or holes in an opaque plastic lens. When a person looks through these holes, only central light rays are allowed to pass into the eye and peripheral light is blocked. By reducing the amount of indirect light, the normal blur circle that appears on the back of the eye (the retina) is reduced.  Reducing the circle of blur achieves the appearance of clearer vision. While these glasses do not actually improve visual acuity, they do decrease the amount of visible blur.

Pinhole glasses are not ideal for all people and situations and will not entirely replace the need for prescription glasses. There are several limitations to wearing this type of corrective eye wear that should be taken into account. Because the amount of light allowed to enter the eye has been decreased, the need for brighter light to compensate is increased. For safety reasons they should not be worn while driving or outdoors as a replacement for sunglasses. They do not have the proper protection from ultraviolet rays that prescription sunglasses have and their design does not allow for a full range of vision. Stenopeic glasses are best suited for people who have under 6 diopters of myopia and who use them mainly for stationary work such as reading, writing, watching television or at the movies. Despite their limitations pinhole glasses do offer a low cost solution for certain tasks and are worth discussing further with an eye care professional.

Pinhole Glasses

June 22nd, 2009

Pinhole glasses are made of an opaque substance such as metal or plastic. Glasses are not made of glass at all. They are know as stenopeic glasses from the Greek words for “little opening”. The user looks through any of the many small holes in the material.

Completely natural, effective, durable and affordable. Pinhole glasses are an alternative to your conventional glasses providing clear vision. They are 100% safe to use and will not harm your eyes. Use the glasses to overcome impaired vision owing to any common refractive eye disorders. They block indirect rays from entering the eye thus preventing them from distorting your vision. Allows only direct and coherent light rays to pass through. They refresh your tired eye muscles and keep eyes from staring. Also, improve clarity and sacadic motion.

There are two distinct forms available for pinhole glasses. They are Traditional pinholes and Model pinholes. The ideal combination would be to use the traditional pair at home and use the model in public. One pair suits all purposes, whether it is for reading, working on the computer, or watching television.

Pinhole glasses are not just for adults but beneficial to children with myopia. They can prevent the onset of acquired myopia in children. They reduce the amount of light entering your eyes so they cannot be used in an environment having dim lights.

Some of the disadvantages of the pinhole glasses are they shall not be used while operating machinery, or any activity involving motion. Some users have said glasses cause multiple images. Some of the advantages include a clearer image at all distances and the life of the glasses last a long time. Also, they do not require any upgrade like prescription glasses. The older pinholes were flat with holes punched through them. But nowadays they have a new look that looks more like sunglasses with the holes on the inner side of lenses.

Are Pinhole Glasses Right For You?

June 19th, 2009

If you have an eyeglass prescription from your doctor, don’t fill it quite yet. Consider an alternative to expensive eyeglasses that could have you seeing clearer than you have in a while. Pinhole glasses are an inexpensive option to prescription glasses. They have either metal or plastic frames which house precisely constructed plastic lenses with lightweight perforations in them. If your eyesight has degenerated because of age, excessive computer use or even due to refractive eye issues, pinhole glasses can definitely help your vision. The perforations are constructed using laser technology and let in direct rays of light which go through into your eye.

With people who have great vision, rays of light that enter into the eye are reflected into a single point on the retina, located behind the eyeball. If you have a refractive eye disorder or some other vision problem, these light rays do not accurately reflect on a single point, thereby causing blurry vision. With pinhole glasses however, the little holes effectively direct light rays into the eye where they are reflected on the retina in a tighter space, thus reducing the blurry or hazy vision.

As long as you have no known degenerative eye condition, pinhole glasses will help you see more clearly in just a short time. They can help with your astigmatism, near-sightedness, far-sightedness, presbyopia (gradual vision degeneration due to age), vision problems due to computer use and even cataracts. While an eyeglass prescription may change every few years, the pinhole glasses remain the same, effectively improving your vision. Why pay hundreds of dollars every few years for new prescription eyeglasses when you can spend far less for a pair on pinhole glasses that will last a lot longer?

Pinhole glasses are not a trend that is going to fall out of favor. They have actually been around for years but have recently become more popular as the cost of prescription eyeglasses are sometimes too cost prohibitive. Even medical professionals are more accepting of them. Consider trying pinhole glasses before heading to the optometrist. You will likely not make the trip.

Benefits and Answers about Pinhole Glasses

June 19th, 2009

Pinhole glasses have been around in various forms for many years and today, you can benefit from the latest in laser technology as it can produce the crispest, most precise perforations in the lenses of the glasses for optimal vision. If you are unsure of what pinhole glasses are, they consist of either a plastic or metal eyeglass frame with the lenses sporting tiny pinholes or perforations which directly focus light into the eye.

When your vision is not perfect, it is because the light reflecting into the back of the eye called the retina does not focus on a single point, like it does for people with good vision. Instead, the light diffracts causing blurred vision. The purpose of the small perforations in the pinhole glasses is to narrowly focus the rays of light into the eye to achieve clearer vision. There are several benefits of these glasses:

  1. Clearer vision and the ability to distinguish close objects from one another
  2. Brighter focus on objects, particularly if light is poor in a space
  3. Great vision regardless of whether you have problems seeing near or far
  4. Versatility in use whether you are watching TV, typing at the computer or reading a book
  5. Sturdy construction and no worries about lens scratching obstructing vision
  6. Inexpensive

Pinhole glasses are best used in situations where you are stationary such as computer work, reading a book, watching television or in a classroom. Fast moving activities such as sports and driving require peripheral vision and the pinhole glasses can only focus light rays directly into the eye, not from the sides.

If you have severe refractive eye disorder with a diopter measurement more than 6, you may not benefit from pinhole glasses. However, if you are experiencing average near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia or eye strain from computer work, pinhole glasses are a great option for improving your vision. Even kids can benefit from them.

Overall, you have nothing to lose by trying pinhole glasses, especially because they are quite a bargain in comparison to prescription eyeglasses. Try pinhole glasses first to see how well your vision improves before opening your wallet at the optometrist.

Pinhole glasses for blurred vision

June 17th, 2009

When we experience blurred vision, we make a quick call to the opthomologist, get an eye exam and buy one of those expensive prescription glasses. Most people know very little about pinhole glasses.

Pinhole glasses are not made of glass but of an opaque material such as plastic or metal. The person wearing these glasses looks through any of the many holes in the material. There are 2 major issues with the prescription. Improper use would leave the lens with scratches and you may have to use different glasses for reading and distance viewing. With the pinhole glasses, these drawbacks are eliminated. They provide clear vision at all distance and one need not switch glasses between watching TV and reading a book and scratches on the pinhole glasses does not affect the performance of these glasses.

Pinhole glasses reduce the scattering of light and improve the vision which helps people with cataract to see well. These glasses are better than the conventional sunglasses too. If you have ever experienced visual stress from looking at the computer, these glasses work best to reduce the stress on the eyes. These glasses play an important role in myopia prevention. It is very sad that a “minus” prescription is given to a child who cannot see the board clearly in school. The simple solution would be to have a couple of pairs of pinhole glasses in each classroom and the students could use them when they have a difficulty reading the board. It is an inexpensive way to treat the problem and completely avoids the risk involved in using a prescription glass for myopia in children.

Did anyone imagine that the pinhole had so many advantages over the prescription glasses? However, these pinhole glasses have their limitations. These glasses do not completely eliminate the blur with people over 6 diopter of myopia. Since the pinholes glasses blocks some light, it is essential to have good lighting on the viewed object. These glasses should not be used while driving or in motion.

Pinhole glasses cannot completely replace the prescription glasses. But these are an inexpensive and a better option for people with mild myopia and for those who use reading glasses.

Relax Your Eyes through Tried and Tested Means

March 24th, 2009

Natural vision improvement depends greatly in the care and the pampering you give your eyes.  Recognizing the importance of our eyes and vision to your life and in your daily living is the core of natural vision improvement; while the steps and methods you do help you attain that goal of healthy eyes and good vision.

The eyes need enough rest and relaxation for it to be able to function optimally.  Remember this: giving your eyes a few moments each day to rest from the constant stresses that it undergoes will matter.
One of the effective relaxation techniques is called ‘palming’.  With the gentlest pressure, cup your eyes with the palms of your hands.  Close your eyes and allow your eyes to relax in the darkness.  Do this a few times each day, for a minute or two each time.

Another technique to relaxing the eyes is by giving it a gentle massage a few times each day.  Cover your eyes and gently dab your fingers around your eye sockets, gently massaging the muscles of the eyes.  After this, gently massage and stroke the ridge of the brows from the innermost edge going out.  This will give your eyes and the muscles surrounding the eyes a few moments of massage and relaxation.

Try also to include this exercise each day to lessen the rigidity of the muscles of the eyes.

Look to the distance and try to swing your body from side to side without removing your focus on the object you choose to at a distance.  Do not forget to breathe normally and blink throughout this exercise.  Do about 100 swings daily to help your eyes relax.

Your eyes need care and attention to function well.  It does not take much time, or even much effort to do something to make a difference in the health of your vision.  The relaxation you give to your eyes will help greatly in naturally improving vision.

These simple techniques do make a difference.

Simple steps to Improve Vision

March 20th, 2009

It’s easy to take our eyes for granted, especially in this fast paced world where people spend hours upon hours in front of the computer.  What makes this situation sad is the fact that with computer use, it is the eyes that suffer the most.

People need to be conscious about how to help the eyes cope with so much time staring fixated on the screen.  What they don’t realize is that having the eyes staring fixed in a point, without any movement or any change in its focus strains the muscles of the eyes and promotes dryness that is not good.  There arises then a need to create good computer use habits, if only to prevent deterioration of the eyes.

One of the simplest things to do is to blink.  Very few people are aware that when they are focused for long periods on the computer, the rate by which they blink slows.  This lessens the lubrication of the eyes and is not good for the eyes.

Taking a few moments every 15 minutes or so to change the focus of the eyes can help in relaxing the eyes.  Start by closing the eyes for a moment.  Open the eyes and look at something close by, then shift the focus to something at the distance.  This short exercise will help in giving the eyes a few moments of movement and relaxation from a stressful fixed gaze.

Another tip is to make sure that the posture and positioning maintained during computer use is correct.  Lighting should also be checked to be conducive to better computer use.

Along with good nutrition and ample rest, these few tips can help in keeping the eyes healthy and maintaining good vision health in this day and age of computers.  Practicing these habits will help the eyes cope and keep them in tip top shape amidst all the stresses they are constantly exposed to.

Simple Massages - Relieve Stress and Healthy Eye-Sight

March 19th, 2009

It is a little known fact that some simple massages can help in improving the vision health of people.  These massages do not take very long and can be incorporated into the daily routine of many people without having to stress too much about them.

Massage in itself has many health benefits.  It can aid in optimizing circulation of blood in the body and provide relaxing relief for tired and stressed out muscles.  Imagine the benefits that can be gained for vision health if the eyes are given attention for a few minutes each day.
There are three very effective massages to help with vision and eye care.  Each targets a specific muscle or group of muscles.

  • Eyebrow Ridge massage

To do this, gently stroke the muscles of the eyebrow ridge from the bridge of the nose to the end of the eyebrows.  Close your eyes and breathe as you do this to allow the eyes to really relax.  Put enough pressure on the strokes to gently stretch the surrounding skin and muscle underneath.

  • Eye massage

With your eyes still closed, focus a gentle stroking motion to the area around the eyes where the orbits or sockets of the eyes are.  Stroke gently and with circular stokes.  Don’t forget to breathe and be gentle.

  • Temple massage

Rub the temples with gentle circular motions to relax the muscles located there.  This massage relieves tension and relieves stress to the eye area.

Doing these massages a few minutes, a couple of times daily can help in improving or maintaining good eye and vision care.  They help the eyes relax and recuperate form the daily tasks that are done throughout the day.  They also help in maintaining good blood circulation and proper functioning of the eyes.

Taking the time to do these massages is important.  Making a conscious effort to improve vision and eye health will really provide many benefits and maybe even improve vision naturally.
