Pinhole Glasses Good for Close Work and Far
Pinhole glasses are not made of glass but an opaque substance like metal or plastic. There are many little holes in the material that reduce the width of diverging rays. Because of this, the pinholes cause clearer vision in those who have myopia, farsightedness, diminished focus and astigmatism. The pupil may be wide open but only the central part is getting light. The visual improvement is greatly noticed.
A man named Scheiner first discovered this effect in 1573. Pinhole cameras operate the same way by increasing the depth of focus. An example of how the pinhole works is when someone will squint to see something clearer. By doing this, the upper and lower eyelids cut off rays that normally enter the pupil and the vision does improve a bit. By looking through the pinhole glasses, this cuts off rays from all sides. These glasses are worn very close to the eye, however in time, the brain ignores the material. While reading a book or paper, the little pinholes are more noticeable because of the short distance used. However, while watching TV or something farther away, only one pinhole would need to be used.
Some advantages of pinhole glasses include, being a simple solution to reading or close work. They provide improved vision at all distances, not just close or far. Pinholes could be used for a whole lifetime, unless they break. They are more inexpensive than prescription glasses. When pinholes get scratched, there is no effect on their performance. They also don’t need to be cleaned; fingerprints or marks do not affect the vision. These are for all ages, so even children can benefit by them. Cataract patients can see better through them. They can also prevent myopia. With so many people at computer screens, wearing pinholes can greatly reduce eye strain.
There are many advantages to pinholes, however, they cannot entirely eliminate the need for prescription glasses. It is so important to visit your eye doctor and know exactly what is best for you.
